Sponges form symbioses with microbes that modulate their ability to maintain the health of temperate and tropical reef systems. A large proportion of species contains photosynthetic symbionts related to abundant free-living cyanobacteria and key primary producers of the genus ''Synechococcus''. My aim is to determine the mutual benefits of the ‘photosymbiosis’ between sponges and cyanobacteria. This will provide a fundamental understanding of how this ancient animal-prokaryote symbiosis adapts and responds to environmental change and has direct relevance for coastal management practices.
